How We Rank
Every ranking follows the same process, and every position has to be defensible from a recorded source.
TopChoiceMalaysia ranks eligible Malaysian companies using one of three models depending on the category: a data-led score when metrics are genuinely comparable across candidates, an evidence-weighted ranking combining quantitative and verified qualitative evidence (our default approach), or a named expert panel where a real, disclosed panel with conflict-of-interest rules exists.
Every ranking follows the same process:
- Define the exact ranking topic and user intent
- Build a candidate universe
- Apply minimum eligibility rules
- Collect evidence and sources
- Assess each criterion using the category method
- Assign rank and tier using documented rules
- Editorial review and conflict check
- Freeze the edition and publish
- Open a correction/appeal route
- Update on schedule or material evidence change
Rank position, Tier, and TopChoice Verified are three independent signals. A company can rank #1 without being Verified; a company can be Verified without ranking #1. Tier is not a quality judgment about the company as a whole — it reflects the evidence available for that specific ranking.
How a ranking is produced
Define the category
We fix the scope — what kind of company qualifies, which locations count, and what disqualifies an entry — before any company is looked at.
Build the candidate set
Companies are gathered from public registries, official websites and industry directories. Nomination does not create a place in the set.
Check eligibility
Each candidate is checked against the published criteria. Companies that fail eligibility are excluded with a recorded reason.
Score against weighted criteria
Remaining companies are scored on the criteria and weights published on each ranking. The weights are shown on the ranking itself.
Editorial review and publication
A second person reviews the evidence behind every position before the edition is published, and each ranking records when it was last researched.
Category methodologies
Questions about the method
How often are rankings updated?
Each ranking is refreshed on a scheduled annual cycle, and sooner if a material fact changes: a licence is revoked, a company closes, or a significant new entrant appears. Every edition shows the date it was last reviewed.
Where does your information come from?
Company facts come from official sources such as SSM records, company websites and regulator registers, together with Google’s public ratings snapshot taken on a stated date. Every ranking edition lists its sources, and our Source Verification Policy describes the standard each source has to meet.
What is the difference between rank, tier and verification?
Rank is a company’s position within one ranking edition. Tier (A, B or C) reflects how strong the evidence is against that ranking’s criteria. Verification is a separate check on a company’s identity and profile details. The three are independent: a verified company can sit anywhere in a ranking, and a high rank does not imply verification. How We Rank explains each one.
Can a company pay for a higher rank?
No. Ranking position is decided by our published criteria and is never for sale. If a page ever carries sponsored or featured placement, it is labelled as such and kept structurally separate from the ranking order. See our Commercial Policy.
Think a position is wrong?
Send the evidence. Corrections are published with the date they were made.
